A natural dietary fibre
Apple pectin is a natural soluble fibre found in many types of fruit and vegetables, particularly apples. It is extracted from the peel and core of apples and produced through an extraction and purification process.
It consists of two main components: pectin acid and pectin (a mixture of polysaccharides). Pectic acid is an acid found in the cell walls of apples and other fruits and vegetables, whilst pectin is a complex carbohydrate consisting of several different monosaccharides. It is also rich in calcium, magnesium and potassium.
Pectin is produced through an extraction and purification process. The process begins by breaking down the cell walls of apples, separating the pectin molecules from the other components. This is achieved through a process of acidification and enzymatic hydrolysis. The pectin is then purified and concentrated, resulting in a product that can be used in a wide range of foods.
Apple pectin is used, amongst other things, as a thickening agent for jellies, jams and sauces, as a stabiliser for ice cream and as a gelling agent for yoghurt. It is also used in some pharmaceutical products and, to some extent, in the cosmetics industry.
Healthy dietary supplement
Apple pectin from VITALOVE is available in two forms: as a powder and as capsules. Apple pectin powder is the purest form of the dietary supplement and is available in both natural and processed forms. It is often added to smoothies, yoghurt or other foods to increase their fibre content.
Apple pectin capsules, on the other hand, are a convenient and simple way to take the supplement and are available in various dosages. The capsules are easy to swallow and, as they dissolve only in the stomach, the ingredients can work to their full potential.
As with all dietary supplements, it is important to consult a doctor before taking one to ensure safety and effectiveness. Taking too high a dose can lead to gastrointestinal side effects such as bloating, cramps and diarrhoea. You should also drink plenty of water whilst taking the supplement.
Regardless of whether the product is taken in powder or capsule form, it should be stored away from light and kept away from heat or cold. It is best to use the original packaging for this, which should be kept sealed airtight.
Making it at home
It is also possible to extract apple pectin at home. With a few simple ingredients and a little patience, it is actually relatively easy to make. When extracting apple pectin, the pectin molecules are broken down into smaller pieces using an acid, such as lemon juice or vinegar. The result is a jelly-like substance that can be used to thicken jams, jellies or sauces.
To do this, you will need apples, a juicer and either lemon juice or vinegar. First, juice the apples and strain the juice through a fine-mesh sieve. This removes all solid particles, leaving a clear liquid.
Once the juice is ready, either the lemon juice or the vinegar is added to it. This breaks down the pectin molecules. The mixture must be left to stand for about one to two hours. During this time, the mixture thickens and becomes jelly-like.
Once the mixture has set, the pectin jelly can be scooped out with a spoon and transferred to an airtight container. The pectin can then be kept in the fridge for several days.
Extracting pectin from apples at home is a simple way to increase the fibre content of your diet. It is also an ideal way to use up surplus apples.
However, taking apple pectin in a convenient powder or capsule form allows you to take even high doses without much effort. It is also easier to measure out the optimal daily dose this way.
